Fishing in Southwest Florida, Captiva Island
Action packed fun for the whole family!
April 11th 2011

Red fish for dinner

Southwest Florida is a fishing mecca! While it is known for late spring Tarpon fishing,  the gulf and Pine Sound off of Sanibel and Captiva Island offer great action  throughout the winter and early spring.  We had 3 generations out with guide Sanders and his home made 28 foot skiff which zipped us from fishing hole  to fishing hole throughout the sound.  Within minutes of dropping the lines, the 4 of us had  a dozen Sea Trout. Great action continued for most of the afternoon and other species caught including  flounder, catfish, and ladyfish. We also had fun fishing from the beach in front of our cottage. Using shrimp , we cast into the surf and caught numerous whitings.  Walking down the beach we saw other fishermen catching  blacktip sharks and sheepshead.

Captiva Island Kayak Fishing
Eco friendly and fun way to fish shallow water
April 8th 2011

Captiva Island Kayak Fishing is great for families!

Kayak fishing is growing as a sustainable, active and fun way to fish.  In Southwest Florida, the barrier islands of Captiva and Sanibel protect Pine Sound which  makes for an amazing place to kayak and fish.  Most of the sound is less than 10 feet deep with coastal islands and oyster bars offering  prime feeding habitat for red fish, spotted trout, flounder, pompanao and half a dozen other saltwater species. Ben and I went a local guide who outfitted our kayaks with sand anchors, trolling motors, icebox, 2 rod and rells each, and tackle. Over on the gulf side,  my neice Caileigh  caught a 3 + foot Bonnethead Shark which just about dragged her kayak out to sea !
