Career Regrets

November 1st 2007

Career regrets - wish you had become a marine biologist? Adventure can fill the void. British Columbia’s coastal waters are home to about 300 resident Orcas, which congregate in the Southern Queen Charlotte Sound and Johnstone Strait during the summer months. Possibly no other place on earth boasts such a large number of these beautiful animals amidst such stunning scenery. Imagine observing whales from the surface of the water in sea kayaks and like real marine biologists using hydrophones (underwater microphones) to listen to their submarine communication.

Orcas are social creautres that travel in post and usually arrive to this area with the first major salmon runs of the season as they exclusively feed on fish. They are highly developed creatures and schientists have learned that each pod has its own distinctive language. Enthusiasts have witnessed "superpods" where as many as 50 or mroe Orcas swim together in the same area. Orcas can be spotted anytime from June through Spetember and are most abundant in July and August.

Langford and Company offers a 5 day Paddle with Orcas trip with an ideal base tent camp accommodation along the shores of Orca territory.
