Description

Johnstone Strait is world famous for its resident population of Orca whales and abundant marine life. Sea lions roam by in the spring and fall and humpback whales are also seen in the summer months. The area boasts views of glacier-carved mountains, brilliant sunsets, and magical night skies. If your main goal is to see orcas and have a lot of fun kayaking, then this is the adventure for you!  Kayakers keep a respectful distance; however, the whales often approach the kayaks for a thrill which is out of this world! Listen to their conversations with hydrophones like the ones used by marine biologists. This is a well paced relaxing adventure focusing on charismatic wildlife. Kayak strokes and rescue techniques are practiced in protected paddling bays prior to the trip - a good refresher for experienced and beginner kayakers alike.

Itinerary Highlights

Arrive in Port McNeill by vehicle or Port Hardy by air.  Check in at your hotel and enjoy an evening of leisure.Enjoy your first wilderness lunch and spend the afternoon honing in on your kayak skills. A tasty meal and campfire delight your senses in the evening. Johnstone Strait is recognized as one of the best places in the world to experience Orcas in the wild. The BC population is made up of 19 whale pods that move around Johnstone Strait on a fairly regular basis. Your home will be in orca territory - a pristine seaside base tent camp with many advantages over a moving camp or expedition style trip.

Enjoy two days spent exploring both on foot and by sea kayak the Orca territory of Johnstone Strait and its surrounding waters. Observe orcas from exhilarating up-close views alongside your sea kayak. Listen to their conversations with hydrophones and learn about their family histories and legends. If you have ever camped on B.C.’s beaches you will know that it gets better and better as you get used to the camping routines and develop awareness of the uniqueness and beauty of your surroundings. Expect to see wildlife: seals, porpoises, sea lions, other whale varieties, bald eagles and many marine birds also frequent the area.

Lessons on navigation, ecologically friendly No Trace camping, camp crafts and outdoor cooking are all part of the experience. Reflect on each day’s splendour with a glass of locally grown red wine or a cup of organic coffee in hand. Enjoy a farewell paddle to the Orcas. Weather permitting you will return to Port McNeill by mid-day.
